What Veneers Are and What They Fix

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic restorations bonded to the front of teeth. They are designed to change visible color, shape, and proportions while preserving healthy tooth structure where possible.

They may be an option for staining that does not respond to whitening, chipped or uneven edges, small gaps, or teeth that look too short or small. Existing decay, gum problems, and bite concerns need evaluation first.

If your goals involve several treatments, a smile makeover brings veneers, whitening, crowns, or bonding into a coordinated plan.

    Who Is a Good Candidate?

Veneers may suit patients with healthy gums, enough sound tooth structure, and cosmetic concerns that ceramic restorations can address. Your goals and willingness to maintain the restorations matter too.

Heavy grinding, an unstable bite, active decay, or gum disease may need to be addressed first. Teeth with significant structural damage may need crowns instead. For widespread wear or repeated breakage, full-mouth reconstruction may be a better starting point.

A consultation establishes whether veneers are appropriate and which alternatives are worth considering.

    Plan Before Preparing

    Minimal-Prep and Digital Design

Digital scans and photographs help plan the proposed shape and proportions. An in-mouth mock-up can show how the design relates to your face, lips, and smile before final restorations.

Minimal-prep veneers aim to preserve enamel, but they are not appropriate for every tooth. Tooth position, existing color, and the space needed for ceramic determine how much preparation is necessary. “Minimal-prep” does not mean no preparation or reversible treatment.

    Chosen Case by Case

    Same-Day Veneers vs. Lab-Made Veneers

    In-House Milling

Same-day veneers are available for select cases using in-house milling. Planning, records, and any necessary foundation care may happen before the restoration appointment. Timing depends on the clinical requirements.

    Ceramist-Made Laboratory Veneers

More complex aesthetic cases may use a ceramist-made laboratory veneer for individualized ceramic work. Dr. Prentice chooses the material and fabrication approach case by case, based on your teeth and the planned design.

    Care Beyond Delivery

How Long Veneers Last and How to Protect Them

Restoration lifespan depends on many factors, including the condition of the underlying teeth, restorative materials, bite forces, grinding or clenching, home care, and professional maintenance.

Brush and clean between teeth daily, keep regular checkups, and avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects. A nightguard may be recommended when grinding or clenching is a concern.

Veneers may eventually need repair or replacement. Follow-up care gives Dr. Prentice an opportunity to monitor the restorations and the teeth beneath them.

    Porcelain Veneers Questions, Answered

Do veneers ruin your natural teeth?

Veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so treatment is generally not reversible. The amount of preparation depends on tooth position, the planned shape, and the material. Dr. Prentice reviews conservative options and the trade-offs before you decide.

    Do veneers look fake?

The goal is a natural appearance. Shade, translucency, shape, and proportion are designed around your face and neighboring teeth. Digital design and a preview give you a chance to discuss the proposed look before it is final. Individual results vary.

How many veneers will I need?

There is no fixed number. It depends on what shows when you smile, the condition of your teeth, and your goals. Some plans treat a few teeth; others combine veneers with whitening, bonding, or crowns.

    How long do veneers last?

Restoration lifespan depends on many factors, including the condition of the underlying teeth, restorative materials, bite forces, grinding or clenching, home care, and professional maintenance. Regular checkups, daily hygiene, and a nightguard when indicated are part of protecting them.

Can veneers be done in one day?

Same-day veneers are available for select cases using in-house milling. Planning and records may take place at earlier visits. More complex aesthetic cases may use ceramist-made laboratory veneers and require additional appointments. The approach is chosen case by case.

    Are veneers covered by insurance?

Cosmetic work usually is not covered, but parts of a plan that restore damaged teeth may be. Our team will review your benefits. Financing options including CareCredit and HSA/FSA payment options are available; eligibility and coverage depend on your plan.
