Most dental plans run on a calendar year and reset on January 1. In most plans, any unused annual maximum does not roll over into 2027, and deductible progress starts again from zero. If you've been postponing a crown, a hygiene visit, or a comprehensive exam, the last few weeks of the year are usually the smartest time to act—not the most stressful.
What Typically Resets January 1
Three things almost always reset: your annual insurance maximum, your deductible (you'll start paying out-of-pocket again before insurance kicks in), and, for many people, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) balances. FSA deadlines and any grace period or carryover vary by employer, so check your plan's rules. Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) usually roll over, but many people still prefer to spend predictable dental costs in the same tax year.
Treatments Worth Scheduling Before December 31, 2026
Same-day crowns, replacement of failing fillings, deep cleanings for early gum disease, and the second hygiene visit of the year are common candidates. If you've had a treatment plan sitting in your patient portal for months, this is the time to revisit it. Even completing diagnostic records—digital scans, photos, and a comprehensive exam—can lock in a baseline before benefits restart.
